Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine @ Burmah Road, Penang

Recently, a group of floggers were invited to taste the food at Hot Wok Nyonya & Local Cuisine along Burmah Road. Hot Wok is certainly not a new establishment, having been in the food business since 1994. It was previously in Gurney Plaza and moved to Tanjung Tokong. Currently, it is located along Burmah Road at the shophouses next to Penang Plaza/Giant, opposite the BMW showroom.

The evening of food tasting was indeed a welcoming one as it helped re-acquaint me with their food. When a group of girl friends who were back from overseas for a holiday wanted to meet up for lunch, I knew Hot Wok would be perfect!

The restaurant is done up with loads of Peranakan/Nyonya decorations and nostalgic items. From old advertisements (these are my favourite) to antique cookery and intricate woodwork desigsn, diners will feel like they’ve been transported back in time as they dine at Hot Wok.

HW7To kick off our girlie lunch meet, we started with a plate of crackers (RM2) served with homemade chilli dip which was more sour than spicy. We loved this dip and polished it off in seconds while browsing the menu.

HW9I insisted that we order the “Kiam Chye Ark” Soup (RM10). “Kiam Chye” is vegetable preserved in brine and is very salty. But it makes for good soup. Meanwhile, “ark” is duck. So it’s essential preserved vegetable and duck soup. The piping hot Kiam Chye Ark soup at Hot Wok is sour and salty. A real treat to the tastebuds and is an excellent way to kick off a hearty meal. One of the best Kiam Chye Ark soups that I’ve had in a long while!

  1. Hmm I had generally been positive about Hot Wok but some food blogger in KL didn’t have such a good encounter with the Kota Damansara outlet… apparently there was quite a nasty exchange between said blogger and owner Kelvyn that went absolutely out of proportion. Maybe Pg outlet is still safe from all that rubbish!

      1. Haha lingzie, dun worry I was trying to resolved the arguement n clear my name, How people critised me also i won’t scold them. Bcoz customer always have their own opinion like some like it salty, spicy etc n some don’t rite. I always tell my customers we cannot compare restaurants bcoz we have our own customers n they have their own too.
So afterall its just business n having pleasure to meet people & providing them with a smile.

  2. 550ml jar of faith,

I dun think i had any arguemeents with people on the blogs. Do check again it is not my name that fire back the nasty exchange. I was trying to cool down both parties. People have their tastes differently so they have the right to give feedback, feedbacks are good to me wheter it is good or bad because it will help me improve and get to know the majority what people prefer.

1 word Marvelous. you do have potential of getting the pictures rite. Thank you for your time & effort . Cheers

  3. I always felt that this restaurant have to go in a group like what we had done. If only got two persons, they have so many yummy dishes to order and I would really have headache on deciding which dish to choose.:( How I wish they can offer combo dishes for couple then it would be very good lah!
.-= cariso´s last blog ..Restoran Hand Noodles – OMG! =-.

  4. This is my favorite restaurant! Try their Otak-Otak the next time. Simply heavenly! What I love about this restaurant is its home-style cooking but beautifully presented amidst a traditional feel complete with the best Nyonya hospitality. I cannot wait to have my next sampling the next time I am in Penang.
