Chinese New Year 2019 8-Course Dinner @ G Hotel, Penang

This Chinese New Year, celebrate the season of Spring and togetherness at G Hotel Penang. Both G Hotel Gurney and G Hotel Kelawai are offering their mouth watering Chinese New Year 8-course dinner from 26th January – 28th February 2019. 

Two different packages are available:-

Longevity Package at RM1888nett

I had the opportunity to sample the dishes in the Longevity Package (RM1888nett) which I thoroughly enjoyed.

The 8-course dinner starts off with the Lucky Fresh Salmon Yee Sang, with lots of fun tossing for prosperity, good luck, good health and more auspicious blessings for the new year. The Yee Sang was enjoyable without being overly sweet and a good balance of sauce.

Braised Seafood Soup with Dried Scallop

Next, tuck into a bowl of heartwarming Braised Seafood Soup with Dried Scallop. Normally I am not a fan of these type of soups as they tend to be very starchy. However, G Hotel’s version won me over, having the briny sweetness of the various seafood used to cook the soup. The hint of sesame oil rounded off the soup very nicely.

Baked Whole Chicken in Spicy Pineapple Sauce

The following course – Baked Whole Chicken in Spicy Pineapple Sauce may look rather ordinary but was far from it in taste. Pineapples were specifically used in this dish to bring a natural sweetness, hence no sugar is used in cooking this dish. The spiciness level was also mild, making it a dish that can be enjoyed by young and old. The baked chicken itself was tender and juicy, holding much savoury flavour.

Deep fried King Prawn in Golden Salted Egg Yolk

Chinese New Year dinners would not be complete without prawns. G Hotel’s version follows the current trend of salted egg yolk dishes. It did not disappoint. This was easily one of my favourite dishes of the night, the king prawns were crunchy and well coated with the salted egg yolk sauce. I found myself reaching for second helpings of this dish!

Sauteed Fresh Scallop in Yam Ring & Lotus Roots

I was delighted to see the next dish – Sauteed Fresh Scallop in yam ring and lotus roots, as I am a huge fan of root vegetables. G Hotel’s rendition of this classic dish easily won me over. The yam ring was my favourite part of the dish with an outer crisp layer revealing a creamy center on the inside. The vegetables were crisp and plump, with the macadamias adding even more texture to the dish.  Fans of yam would not want to miss this dish.

Steamed Pearl Garoupa Fish in Supreme Soy Sauce

Steamed pearl garoupa was also enjoyable with its robust flesh. The fish cooked in supreme soy sauce had a delicate smokiness which I was fond of.

Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Dried Oyster and Lotus Nuts

We rounded off the dinner with Steamed Lotus Leaf Rice with Dried Oyster and lotus nuts. Its generous serving left us stuffed to the brim.

Sweetened Longan Tea with Glutinous Rice Balls

Finally, for dessert the sweetened longan tea with glutinous rice balls, was just right. Not overly sweet, the dessert is sweetened using the natural sweetness from dried longans. The glutinous rice balls had black sesame filling, my favourite kind!

This 8-course meal makes up the Longevity Package at RM1888 nett. It is available from 26th January – 28th February 2019 at both G Hotel Gurney & G Hotel Kelawai. Price includes free flow of chinese tea. The dinners will be served in the various function rooms so that diners can enjoy dining in a private environment.

Personally, I found the seaweed oysters with fried egg suited my palate the best. The salt and pepper oysters were pretty good as well.

Moving onto the mains, I thoroughly enjoyed the almond butter rice, vegetarian mushroom pie and the pan seared duck with fruity sauce. The cranberry, almond and spinach lasagna was pretty good too.

To kick off the 8-course menu, we had an appetizing capellini cooked with a spicy shrimp paste, topped with nama hotate. I personally love capellini and was quite intrigued by the spicy shrimp paste flavours. It had a fiery kick, which mellowed out a lil with the sweet nama hotate. An interesting start to the meal!

For the soup, we were presented with a Chicken Consomme which had a clean and light flavour. It was delicate and comforting at the same time, with the daikon giving some texture and more flavour to the dish.

50°C Garoupa with White Wine Saffron Veloute

For the 1st main, we had a sous vide garoupa with white wine saffron veloute. The fish was tender but I thought it would be even better with a crispy skin. I couldn’t quite discern the saffron flavour in the veloute. Nevertheless the crispy potatoes were thoroughly enjoyable eaten together with the fish and veloute.

Chicken Roulade with Velvety Truffle Mash

For the second main, we tried the Chicken Roulade with velvety truffle mash. I preferred this main to the fish. The velvety mash was silky smooth with a wonderful truffle flavour. To my surprise the vegetables on the side had a spicy kick thanks to the use of bird’s eye chilli.

Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial

For dessert, Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial is served. It is a very sweet champagne which is meant to be served with ice cubes. As the ice cubes melt and dilute the champagne, the sweetness mellows out and makes for a wonderful dessert pairing.

Sweet Ending

The Sweet Ending is inspired by Tiramisu according to Chef Jackie. The profiterole encases a silky smooth mascarpone cheese filling, and the vanilla ice cream is served with an espresso crumb. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this dessert as it was not overly sweet and paired perfectly with the Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial.

G Ball 2018 – Business Appreciation Dinner by G Hotel

The annual G Ball by G Hotel made its much awaited appearance once again in 2018 marking it’s 10th anniversary with a mysterious and eerie theme this year – Ghost Ball 2018. However, this was no ordinary ghostly ball (nope, no garish blood splatters or gaudy halloween costumes) A lone Black Crow adorned the invite with the tag “Come if you Dare!”

As with all things #Stylishly_G, G Hotel’s Ghost Ball had a touch of opulence and elegance, marked by the hundreds of lit candles that sat gracefully on black candelabrums,  pleathora of black crows that hung from their Grand Ballroom’s ceiling and lots of dried leaves and branches that were artistically strewn across the dining table.

Welcoming speech by Mr Michael Hanratty, General Manager of G Hotel

The exclusive Ghost Ball 2018 hosted over 300 corporate guests, travel agents, media & business partners who were  to invited enjoy the night filled with good food and great entertainment, not forgetting generous lucky draw prizes too!

Guests came dressed in their formal best and were treated to a 5 course dinner accompanied by lots of wine and alcohol, which filled us to the brim. The dinner kicked off with a sweet crab meat and green apple appetizer which tasted of the ocean. Followed by a creamy soothing butternut squash soup. After a pleasant palate cleanser, came the generous main course – a duo of lamb rack and salmon. I enjoyed the provencal crusted salmon immensely. Lastly, a light and tangy citrus cheesecake rounded off the dinner.

Reverse Tap Beer at Tree Bar

This machine systematically dispenses beer from the bottom up, as opposed to regular taps. The reverse tap beer system uses specially customized glasses which can fit into the machine for dispensing. A pint of beer is them dispensed from the bottom up in 7 seconds (9 times faster than done manually)!

The resulting beer is much smoother as less gas/air is introduced during the dispensing process. I was surprised at the taste and texture of the beer and really enjoyed it!

For starters after the fresh sashimi, we tried the Hana Ikura Maki. Ginza’s sushi are all hand made and hand pressed without using machine. I liked the texture of this temaki and found the ratio of rice to filling just right.

Seafood lovers should not miss Ginza’s grilled giant squid. Their version has the fragrance of butter and soy sauce. The texturre was good too, slightly chewy but not rubbery or hard.

Unagi Don with Onsen Tamago RM36.80

The Unagi Don with Onsen tamago is not listed in their menu, but it is a must try for me! The grilled unagi is thick and melt in your mouth – perfect when eaten with warm rice coated in the yolks of the onsen egg. I haven’t had unagi in a long time (having eaten some weird tasting unagi a while back which turned me off). But one bite of this and I fell in love all over again with unagi! Ginza uses top quality unagi which is air flown from Japan which is evident in the taste! Highly recommended.

Sanma Shioyaki Set RM17.80 (Set Lunch Menu)

For mains, we go to try the Sanma Shioyaki Set (the cheapest option from their Set Lunch Menu). Instead of normal miso soup, Ginza offers a more premium Dobin Mushi (Japanese seafood soup in a teapot). This soup is nourishing and heartwarming with the sweet flavours from the seafood and mushrooms used. A slice of lime is served together with the soup and you can add it to add some tangy flavours. I liked both versions with and without the lime.

The sanma fish had smokey flavours from the grill with crisp skin revealing tender flesh on the inside. The set lunch also includes salad, chawanmushi, rice and ice cream for dessert.

We tried – Uzura Tamago (quail egg),  Negima (Chicken with Japanese Leek) & Tebasaki (Chicken Wing)

The Uzura Tamago was a new thing for me because you are supposed to eat the whole thing including its shell! I was rather apprehensive but found it to be unique and pretty good! Like quail egg with a crispy smokey outer layer.

The tebasaki was my favourite – just lightly seasoned with salt and pepper and grilled over charcoal fire.

Ei Hire (Grilled Stingray Fin) RM18

We had a pint of Suntory Gold – Ginza carries Suntory Draught Beer which tastes vastly different from canned ones. I hardly drink beer but Suntory is one of my favourites for its smooth texture. To go with beer, Ginza’s menu offers a variety to snacks that pairs well with beer. We tried the Ei Hire – Grilled Stingray fin & Dried Sardine Sheets.

The Tatami Iwashi (Dried sardine sheet) was crunchy and addictive, while the Ei Hire (Grilled Stingray Fin) had a lovely smokey sweet flavour and slightly chewy. My favourite was the Ei Hire. I think I could polish off one plate on my own! lol

Dim Sum

For starters, Vino Vino offers an interesting pairing of dim sum (‘siew mai’ & ‘har kao’) with the champagnes which turned out to be pleasant indeed. Who would have thought?

Then, we dug into the mains… charcoal grilled mud crabs which were bursting with briny sweet flavours of the sea. Yep we did have to get our hands dirty. Though Vino Vino offers plastic disposable gloves, I just preferred using my hands… hehe

Fresh Grilled Prawns

Next, we indulged in prawns both big and small.. the huge prawns were fresh and once again grilled with a touch of salt. It was all that was needed to bring out the sweet flavours of the prawn, paired with the delicate smoky flavour from the grill. The flesh was bouncy and succulent too!

Meanwhile the deep fried small prawns vied for our attention. We were snacking on them non stop as they were easy to eat and addictive!

In between the crabs and prawns, we also had free flow garlic fried rice, potato salad, vegetable salad, miso soup and fruits. The garlic fried rice was a winner for me – fragrant and comforting. My attempts to cut down on carbs failed miserably as this garlic fried rice tempted me to tuck away a huge bowl (despite being stuffed from the seafood!)

All in all, we had a lovely lazy Saturday Brunch filled with fresh charcoal grilled seafood and lots of bubbly!
