Air Dried Beef with melon

Caesar Salad Corner
Moving onto the mains, I thoroughly enjoyed the almond butter rice, vegetarian mushroom pie and the pan seared duck with fruity sauce. The cranberry, almond and spinach lasagna was pretty good too.

Pan Seared Duck with Fruity Sauce
Oyster Au Gratin with Mango Salsa
Vegetarian Mushroom Pie

The 9ine by Jackie Wong has recently opened its doors at Jalan Kek Chuan, offering modern European cuisine with a twist of local flavours. A brunch menu is available during the day and is swapped with a dinner menu once night falls. We attended their Grand Opening recently and were treated to a specially curated tasting menu by Chef Jackie Wong.
Cozy environment downstairs for casual dining.
The 9ine’s baristas whip up a mean cup of joe. We got to try their coffee cocktails too!
Elegant dining space upstairs
After the coffee cocktail, we were ushered upstairs to the elegant dining area. This space is perfect for private parties too!
Bubbly for the evening…
The tasting menu is created to pair with Moët & Chandon champagnes as well as Terrazas Reserva Chardonnay
Capellini, Spicy Shrimp Paste, Nama Hotate
(Pairing with Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial)
To kick off the 8-course menu, we had an appetizing capellini cooked with a spicy shrimp paste, topped with nama hotate. I personally love capellini and was quite intrigued by the spicy shrimp paste flavours. It had a fiery kick, which mellowed out a lil with the sweet nama hotate. An interesting start to the meal!
Nordic Salad with Salmon Tartare
(Pairing with Moët & Chandon Brut Imperial)
Next up was a delicate Nordic salad with salmon tartare. The salad was refreshing and light.
Chicken Consomme with Tender Daikon
For the soup, we were presented with a Chicken Consomme which had a clean and light flavour. It was delicate and comforting at the same time, with the daikon giving some texture and more flavour to the dish.
Lime & Basil Granita
50°C Garoupa with White Wine Saffron Veloute
(Pairing with Terrazas Reserva Chardonnay)
For the 1st main, we had a sous vide garoupa with white wine saffron veloute. The fish was tender but I thought it would be even better with a crispy skin. I couldn’t quite discern the saffron flavour in the veloute. Nevertheless the crispy potatoes were thoroughly enjoyable eaten together with the fish and veloute.
Chicken Roulade with Velvety Truffle Mash
(Pairing with Terrazas Reserva Chardonnay)
For the second main, we tried the Chicken Roulade with velvety truffle mash. I preferred this main to the fish. The velvety mash was silky smooth with a wonderful truffle flavour. To my surprise the vegetables on the side had a spicy kick thanks to the use of bird’s eye chilli.
Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial
For dessert, Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial is served. It is a very sweet champagne which is meant to be served with ice cubes. As the ice cubes melt and dilute the champagne, the sweetness mellows out and makes for a wonderful dessert pairing.
(Pairing with Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial)
The Sweet Ending is inspired by Tiramisu according to Chef Jackie. The profiterole encases a silky smooth mascarpone cheese filling, and the vanilla ice cream is served with an espresso crumb. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this dessert as it was not overly sweet and paired perfectly with the Moët & Chandon Ice Imperial.
Petit Four with Coffee/Tea
Specially Curated tasting menu for the grand occasion
Brunch Menu (Available from 10am-5pm)
the 9ine by Jackie Wong will be having a Guest Chef Event – Classic Meets Modern from 15th-31st July

The annual G Ball by G Hotel made its much awaited appearance once again in 2018 marking it’s 10th anniversary with a mysterious and eerie theme this year – Ghost Ball 2018. However, this was no ordinary ghostly ball (nope, no garish blood splatters or gaudy halloween costumes) A lone Black Crow adorned the invite with the tag “Come if you Dare!”
As with all things #Stylishly_G, G Hotel’s Ghost Ball had a touch of opulence and elegance, marked by the hundreds of lit candles that sat gracefully on black candelabrums, pleathora of black crows that hung from their Grand Ballroom’s ceiling and lots of dried leaves and branches that were artistically strewn across the dining table.
Sneak Peek before the Grand Ballroom doors were opened…
Decor at the foyer
Cocktails galore for guests to enjoy before entering the Grand Ballroom
“Ghostly” models mingling with the guests to set the mood…
My outfit for the night… channeling my inner Black Crow Queen… lol
Quick close up selfie of the awesome make up by my trusty make up artist Dean from B Prive Academy <3
He asked if I wanted ‘normal dinner make up’ or if I wanted to go crazy with the Black Crow/Ghost theme so I said let’s go crazy! 😛
It’s not everyday that one can dress up as such and I must thank G Hotel for giving me the perfect opportunity to do so!
The doors to the Grand Ballroom soon opened to reveal a breathtaking, mystical interior…
Welcoming speech by Mr Michael Hanratty, General Manager of G Hotel
The exclusive Ghost Ball 2018 hosted over 300 corporate guests, travel agents, media & business partners who were to invited enjoy the night filled with good food and great entertainment, not forgetting generous lucky draw prizes too!
Guests came dressed in their formal best and were treated to a 5 course dinner accompanied by lots of wine and alcohol, which filled us to the brim. The dinner kicked off with a sweet crab meat and green apple appetizer which tasted of the ocean. Followed by a creamy soothing butternut squash soup. After a pleasant palate cleanser, came the generous main course – a duo of lamb rack and salmon. I enjoyed the provencal crusted salmon immensely. Lastly, a light and tangy citrus cheesecake rounded off the dinner.
Appetizer – Timbale of Jumbo Crab Meat & Granny Smith Apple Topped with Flying Fish Roe
Soup – Cream of Butternut Squash Cinnamon & Crispy Smoked Duck
Palate Cleanser – Homemade Basil & Lemongrass Sherbet
Main Course – Slow Roasted Duet of Lamb Rack & Provencal Crusted Salmon on Potato Puree, Field Vegetables with Lamb Jus & Cream of Thyme
Dessert – Citrus Cheesecake
More photos of the candles… simply because I love them and find them so beautiful!
Kudos to the G Hotel banquet staff who must have been on the edge the whole night (hello fire hazard!) They were most professional in their handling of the candles – diligently putting them out before they burnt out and exchanging with new ones.
Lovely tunes both classic and contemporary by the soprano and musical ensemble
Graceful Ballet Performances by the talented ballet dancers from Green Apple Ballet
Best Dressed Lady of the Night (that’s me!!!!!)
The prize was a giant bottle of Moet & Chandon champagne that lights up!

Tree Bar at G Hotel Gurney is Penang’s largest alfresco bar built under an over 40meter tall, hundred-year-old Angsana tree. With a seating capacity of 198, Tree Bar is a laid back hang out spot to unwind after a long hard day at work.
Tree Bar offers a wide selection of international beers, wines, cocktails (including Tree Bar specialty cocktails that are personally curated by their in-house mixologists) and a good mix of snacks and bites. Tree Bar has recently introduced Penang’s first Reverse Tap Beer.
Me having a go at dispensing the Reverse Tap Beer!
Reverse Tap Beer at Tree Bar
This machine systematically dispenses beer from the bottom up, as opposed to regular taps. The reverse tap beer system uses specially customized glasses which can fit into the machine for dispensing. A pint of beer is them dispensed from the bottom up in 7 seconds (9 times faster than done manually)!
The resulting beer is much smoother as less gas/air is introduced during the dispensing process. I was surprised at the taste and texture of the beer and really enjoyed it!
Fitting the glass on to the machine
Beer being dispensed from the bottom up!
The perfect pint… all done in 7 seconds!
Tree Bar serves Kronenbourg beer for the Reverse Tap Beer and is priced at RM35 per pint
Here’s a short video of yours truly trying to introduce the Reverse Tap Beer (emphasis on the trying.. since this is my very first video! lol)
Tree Bar’s food menu is pretty extensive as well, featuring 3 new dishes –Lamb Filo Pastry, Bruschetta and Tree Bar Oriental Slider
Lamb Filo Pastry RM28nett
The Lamb Filo Pastry features minced lamb and potatoes marinated with Asian spices and hand wrapped in crispy filo pastry. Resulting a savoury, mildly spicy crispy bite that pairs well with a refreshing Mint Raita dip.
The Bruschetta offers 3 different toppings on slices of french baguette – smoked salmon, tomato & basil and chicken, apple & mayo mix. My favourite was the classic tomato & basil combination, though the chicken, apple & mayo mix came in a close second.
Tree Bar Oriental Slider RM30nett
Meanwhile, the Tree Bar Oriental Slider features chicken and prawn patty mini burgers.
Other favourites from their food menu include Nachos with homemade guacamole and tomato salsa dip, Mozarella cheese sticks, Seafood pizza, Buffalo wings, Siu Mai, Sausage puffs and Gyoza.
(with guacamole & tomato salsa dip)
Tree Bar’s nachos is an addictive snack as I couldn’t get enough of their home made guacamole!
Mozzarella Cheese Sticks RM22nett
Perfect for cheese lovers! These are served with Mexican garlic salsa.
Seafood Pizza RM32nett
Siu Mai RM14nett
Buffalo Wings RM32nett
Mojito Breeze RM30nett
Tree Bar is also known to serve the lowest price in town with 3 pints of beer from RM58nett onwards. Their selection of beers include Hoegaarden, Erdinger Weissbeir, Kronenbourg, Asahi, Connor’s Stout and Carslberg.
Tree Bar is opened DAILY seven days a week from 12pm-1am (Sunday to Thursday); 12pm-2am (Friday & Saturday)
Happy Hour – Buy 1 Free 1 on all house pours from 12noon-4pm

Ginza Japanese restaurant was one of the first few outlets to open at Vantage Desiran Tanjung at Tanjung Tokong, Penang. And they are now celebrating their 4th Anniversary! In conjunction with this, Ginza is offering various promotions to celebrate this joyous milestone!
Ginza Japanese restaurant 4th Anniversary Promotion:-
- RM9.90nett for Fresh Sashimi (5 slices on a plate) – Salmon or Tai
- RM19.90nett for 3 Skewers of Yakitor/Kushiyaki items with a pint of Asahi beer
- 30% off all Nigiri sushi (available for dine in & takeaway)
- Japanese Premium Beer – Suntory 3 pints RM56nett (Suntory Gold); RM58nett (Suntory Black) For the month of June ONLY
RM9.90nett Fresh Sashimi – Tai
RM9.90nett Fresh Sashimi – Salmon
Ginza prides themselves in using premium ingredients with their seafood and ingredients air flown from Japan (arrivals every Tues and Friday to ensure maximum freshness)
Ginza’s Sushi Chef – one of the few Sushi chefs in Penang who has the license to prepare Fugu
Hana Ikura Maki RM26.80
For starters after the fresh sashimi, we tried the Hana Ikura Maki. Ginza’s sushi are all hand made and hand pressed without using machine. I liked the texture of this temaki and found the ratio of rice to filling just right.
Ika Butter Shoyu Maruyaki RM24.80
Seafood lovers should not miss Ginza’s grilled giant squid. Their version has the fragrance of butter and soy sauce. The texturre was good too, slightly chewy but not rubbery or hard.
Unagi Don with Onsen Tamago RM36.80
The Unagi Don with Onsen tamago is not listed in their menu, but it is a must try for me! The grilled unagi is thick and melt in your mouth – perfect when eaten with warm rice coated in the yolks of the onsen egg. I haven’t had unagi in a long time (having eaten some weird tasting unagi a while back which turned me off). But one bite of this and I fell in love all over again with unagi! Ginza uses top quality unagi which is air flown from Japan which is evident in the taste! Highly recommended.
Sanma Shioyaki Set RM17.80 (Set Lunch Menu)
For mains, we go to try the Sanma Shioyaki Set (the cheapest option from their Set Lunch Menu). Instead of normal miso soup, Ginza offers a more premium Dobin Mushi (Japanese seafood soup in a teapot). This soup is nourishing and heartwarming with the sweet flavours from the seafood and mushrooms used. A slice of lime is served together with the soup and you can add it to add some tangy flavours. I liked both versions with and without the lime.
The sanma fish had smokey flavours from the grill with crisp skin revealing tender flesh on the inside. The set lunch also includes salad, chawanmushi, rice and ice cream for dessert.
Kiku Set RM58.80
The Kiku Set at Ginza is one of the premium set meals in the menu. This set offers plenty to the diner – assorted raw fish sashimi on rice, pan fried mixed mushrooms, mix fried seafood and vegetables, wakame, chawanmushi and dobin mushi. Thus, this is indeed a set for someone who likes variety!
Mixed fried from the Kiku Set
Anniversary Promotion RM19.90nett for 3 skewers of Yakitori/Kushiyaki + a pint of Asahi
We tried – Uzura Tamago (quail egg), Negima (Chicken with Japanese Leek) & Tebasaki (Chicken Wing)
The Uzura Tamago was a new thing for me because you are supposed to eat the whole thing including its shell! I was rather apprehensive but found it to be unique and pretty good! Like quail egg with a crispy smokey outer layer.
The tebasaki was my favourite – just lightly seasoned with salt and pepper and grilled over charcoal fire.
Ei Hire (Grilled Stingray Fin) RM18
We had a pint of Suntory Gold – Ginza carries Suntory Draught Beer which tastes vastly different from canned ones. I hardly drink beer but Suntory is one of my favourites for its smooth texture. To go with beer, Ginza’s menu offers a variety to snacks that pairs well with beer. We tried the Ei Hire – Grilled Stingray fin & Dried Sardine Sheets.
The Tatami Iwashi (Dried sardine sheet) was crunchy and addictive, while the Ei Hire (Grilled Stingray Fin) had a lovely smokey sweet flavour and slightly chewy. My favourite was the Ei Hire. I think I could polish off one plate on my own! lol
Tatami Iwashi (Dried sardine sheet) RM18
Private room (Tatami seating)
Private Room (normal seats)
Ginza Japanese Restaurant has a few private rooms (with both normal seating & tatami seating) so this place is ideal for private functions and celebrations both big and small. One of their private rooms can be extended and enlarged to accommodate up to 30pax.

For those who love brunch plus a lil’ bubbly, Vino Vino Bistro’s Saturday Champagne Brunch would be right up your alley. Vino Vino Bistro at Bay Avenue is a renowned yakitori place, but they’ve recently rolled out their new promotion – Saturday Champagne Brunch which happens only once a month (the first Saturday of the month)! And so, we put on our Saturday Best and headed over to Vino Vino to check out what the brunch had to offer…
Nicolas Feuillatte One Fo(u)r Brut
Taste profile: Floral & zesty
Nicolas Feuillatte One Fo(u)r Rose
Taste Profile: Floral with delicate fruity notes
The Champagne brunch features Nicolas Feuillatte’s One Fo(u)r champagne from their Unexpected Collection. One will immediately notice its cute size and interesting wrist strap attached to the bottle. This exclusive Nicolas Feuillatte design is to make it easy and stylish to carry the champagne wherever one may go. Hence, it is the champagne to enjoy any place, anywhere! While I enjoyed both types of champagne, my preference leaned slightly towards the Rose (and no… the champagne’s lovely pale pink color had nothing to do with it… lol)
For starters, Vino Vino offers an interesting pairing of dim sum (‘siew mai’ & ‘har kao’) with the champagnes which turned out to be pleasant indeed. Who would have thought?
Then, we dug into the mains… charcoal grilled mud crabs which were bursting with briny sweet flavours of the sea. Yep we did have to get our hands dirty. Though Vino Vino offers plastic disposable gloves, I just preferred using my hands… hehe
Charcoal Grilled Mud Crab
Fresh Grilled Prawns
Next, we indulged in prawns both big and small.. the huge prawns were fresh and once again grilled with a touch of salt. It was all that was needed to bring out the sweet flavours of the prawn, paired with the delicate smoky flavour from the grill. The flesh was bouncy and succulent too!
Meanwhile the deep fried small prawns vied for our attention. We were snacking on them non stop as they were easy to eat and addictive!
Deep Fried Small Prawns
Free flow items include:-
Garlic Fried Rice, Potato Salad, Fresh Vegetable Salad, Miso Soup & Fruits
In between the crabs and prawns, we also had free flow garlic fried rice, potato salad, vegetable salad, miso soup and fruits. The garlic fried rice was a winner for me – fragrant and comforting. My attempts to cut down on carbs failed miserably as this garlic fried rice tempted me to tuck away a huge bowl (despite being stuffed from the seafood!)
All in all, we had a lovely lazy Saturday Brunch filled with fresh charcoal grilled seafood and lots of bubbly!
Have a lil’ bubbly, shall we? 🙂
